Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Dissociation is a natural response to overwhelm or trauma where your mind creates distance from what you’re experiencing. It can feel like zoning out, feeling disconnected from your body, losing track of time, or not feeling fully present.

For some people, dissociation shows up occasionally during stress. For others—especially those with a trauma history—it can happen more frequently and feel confusing or even scary.

Dissociation isn’t something “wrong” with you. It’s your brain’s way of protecting you. In therapy, we work on helping you feel more grounded, present, and in control without forcing anything too fast.

  • Neurofeedback helps regulate how your brain responds to stress and trauma. Instead of only talking about what happened, neurofeedback works directly with your brain’s activity to help it become more balanced and less reactive.

    Many people with trauma experience:

    • Constant anxiety or hypervigilance

    • Difficulty relaxing or sleeping

    • Emotional overwhelm or shutdown

Neurofeedback gently trains your brain to move out of survival mode, which can lead to:

    • Reduced anxiety

    • Better emotional regulation

    • Improved focus and sleep

It’s a non-invasive, brain-based approach that works well alongside therapy.

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps your brain process and resolve traumatic memories more quickly than traditional talk therapy.

ART uses eye movements (similar to EMDR) to help your brain reprocess distressing images, sensations, and memories so they no longer feel as intense or overwhelming.

    What makes ART different:

    • You don’t have to talk through every detail of your trauma

    • Many people experience relief in just a few sessions

    • It focuses on changing how memories are stored in the brain

ART can be especially helpful for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and distressing memories that feel “stuck.”

  • Yes. We provide specialized therapy for individuals experiencing dissociation, including Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

Working with dissociation requires a careful, structured, and respectful approach. Therapy focuses on:

    • Creating safety and stability

    • Understanding different parts of yourself

    • Reducing overwhelm and internal conflict

    • Building communication and cooperation internally

You won’t be pushed too fast or expected to “figure it all out” at once. The goal is to help you feel more grounded, more integrated, and more in control over time.

  • This is a really good question and it honestly gets asked quite often! At Healing Ground Counseling, I hope that you can find the process of getting started on your healing journey as easy as possible.

Firstly, you’ll want to decide whether or not you want to have a free 15-minute consultation. This could be done virtually, by phone, or in-person (you decide what you’d prefer).

If you’d like to just get started, you can either email me at eddie@healingground-counseling.com to see what is available and schedule an appointment, or you can schedule using this link to access my calendar.

When requesting an appointment for the first time, you can press the Request an Appointment button in the link above and click on either “Initial Consultation” or “Intake Psychiatric Diagnostic Assessment Session.” After the first appointment, you would choose between “Psychotherapy,” “Family psychotherapy,” or “Individual Psychotherapy with Neurofeedback.”

Once you’ve clicked on what you’re wanting to book, you’ll gain access to the times that I have available and can request an appointment.

Just as a friendly reminder, all intake paperwork will need to be completed at least 24 hours prior to your first appointment. That will get sent to you via Simple Practice to your email.

I look forward to supporting you in your healing journey!

  • A 15-minute consultation is an opportunity for you to get to know me as your potential therapist. It is wise to write down and ask any questions that you may have. Most individuals ask about what the therapy process looks like, what kinds of methods that I use, how long the treatment process can take, and even what makes me passionate about being a therapist.

This is honestly like an open-mic session where you get to share what you feel comfortable with and see if we’d be a good fit for each other. You have every right to continue searching for another therapist who you feel would be a good fit for you and I’m happy to recommend others that have specialties in other areas as well.

Reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation! You can email me at eddie@healing-groundcounseling.com or you can use this link to access my calendar.

I look forward to hearing from you!

  • If you’re planning on coming in person, we have a comfortable waiting room with some magazines about mental health and soft, therapeutic music to listen to while you wait for your appointment time. When it’s time for your appointment, I’ll come out to the waiting room to greet you and guide you to my office. Once we’re in my office, you can take a seat anywhere you’d like and we’ll go from there!

If you’re planning to meet virtually, you’ll receive an appointment reminder with a link to the secure, HIPAA compliant video platform. Once you click on that link, you’ll get sent to a virtual waiting room until I click the button to start the session. When the session is started, then we can begin visiting!

  • That’s a really good question! Before your first appointment, you’ll notice that a credit card needs to be put on file in the HIPAA secure platform that I use (Simple Practice). Your credit card is only charged by the end of the day after your scheduled session. No one will have access to your credit card information as it is privately secured on the platform and will be kept confidential.

You will also be asked to sign a payment authorization form prior to your first session.
