What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based, eye movement therapy that helps individuals quickly and effectively resolve trauma and other distressing experiences. As the name suggests, we are not merely trying to process through the trauma that you have experienced, but resolve any negative sensations that your mind and body are continuing to hold onto. This further reassures to yourself that you are safe, able to connect to others in healthy ways, and are not needing to live in your trauma any further.

By using guided imagery and rapid eye movements, ART allows the brain to process and resolve painful memories and stuck emotions without the need to relive the trauma in detail. It helps resolve symptoms such as anxiety, fear, guilt, and physical tension by calming the nervous system and replacing negative images with more peaceful ones. Many clients experience significant relief in just a few sessions, feeling lighter, more in control, and emotionally free and healed. Get scheduled for your first ART session today!

 FAQs

  • That’s a great question! There are many ways ART can go depending on the presenting problem; however, the process is very similar regardless of problem.

At the beginning of the session, your therapist will ask you to do a body scan to see what sensations you feel in the current moment when thinking about the problem. You will then work with your therapist in moving those sensations so that you can feel clearer and ready to process through your problem.

Each part of the ART process will be directed by your therapist, so you don’t have to feel like you know what you’re doing. Your therapist will safely and comfortably guide you through the remainder of the process, moving sensations with body scans all along the way.

The nice thing about the end of every ART session is that there is resolution of the problem and a greater perspective provided to you! This problem doesn’t have to stay with you or keep you feeling stuck. You can get your best life back!

  • Both ART and EMDR utilize bilateral stimulation to trigger both sides of the brain in order to process through unresolved issues and traumas that are stored in the long-term and subconscious memory.

ART works on resolving problematic memories, sensations, and emotions through the use of images that the brain can bring to the surface, whereas EMDR works with negative cognitions. Although EMDR utilizes images throughout the process, most clients enjoy the simplicity of ART to where they focus on the image(s) and the bodily sensations that are attached to the image(s).

As the name suggests, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a process that is meant to lead to faster, more accelerated results by resolving traumatic images and sensations. On the other hand, EMDR has a structured, 8-phase protocol (per problem) that works toward desensitizing the distress that's associated with a memory, allowing the brain to integrate it more.

  • It may sound too good to be true, but most people find relief and resolution of their problematic and traumatic memories and struggles in as few as 3-6 sessions! Many people enjoy using ART to help them process through less traumatic and problematic things as well because it helps them to avoid overthinking their solution and feel a greater sense of confidence in their newer perspective.
