Hi! My name is Eddie Shin and I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and also the owner and founder of Healing Ground Counseling. I wanted to share a little bit about myself, about my mission, my goal, and the purpose of creating Healing Ground Counseling.

Something that I’ve been really passionate about is helping people to be able to heal from their trauma and also to help those who have been struggling with dissociation of any kind, specifically dissociative identity disorder (DID), to discover their voice. I’ve noticed that something really common is the misconception of what DID and trauma are. They oftentimes get misdiagnosed, which can cause a lot of difficulties in that individual’s life, as well as unanswered questions of why certain treatments aren’t working for them. I really want to provide a feeling of empowerment and capability to overcome and actually heal from trauma, not just finding temporary relief through the basic coping skills that are offered throughout the internet.

My hope is that, just like climbing a mountain or going through a difficult hike, we can find healing together, one step at a time. It oftentimes will take us working together as a team to recognize that encouragement is a very important aspect of the therapy process, as well as the therapeutic relationship. I really hope that those who come to see me will feel heard, understood, and important, and that they will feel safe enough to be able to share their most vulnerable difficulties that will enable us to be able to move through those together and ultimately heal.

As I’ve been trying to figure out what I really want to focus on as a therapist throughout the years of engaging in mental health treatment, I’ve been really noticing that I’ve gravitated a lot more toward the specific area of trauma. This area typically is one that most people seem to be intimidated by or nervous of because it is a touchy subject, which it is and can be difficult to work with at times; however, as I’ve moved through my journey as a therapist so far, I have found myself investing a lot of time and energy into seeking out more learning and education on trauma and on how to help people actually heal from it instead of just generalizing my focus on the myriad of mental health challenges.

I find myself oftentimes noticing the struggles throughout the world and throughout my community where I live in Utah and notice that even if someone doesn’t come from the worst family background, we all experience trauma in one form or another. This can make it difficult for us to live our best lives and become the best individuals that we deserve, that our family deserve, that our children deserve, and that this world needs. I hope that we can change the world and this community one person and one problem at a time as we work to heal.

You may have wondered why I chose the logo and theme of redwoods to represent Healing Ground Counseling. One reason is that I absolutely fell in love with the redwoods when I was living up in Humboldt while going to college! I spent every day surrounded by that breathtaking forest and felt as if I were surrounded by safety each time I was there. The other reason is about what redwood trees represent to me. Those trees can be 200-300 feet tall on average, but they can't survive on their own. Their root system works in a way to where they need the other redwood trees to thrive and survive. Much like the redwoods, I believe that we need each other to lift one another up and thrive in this world! We don't need to feel like we need to navigate our struggles on our own.

Let’s make your life and this world a better place! That is my mission and that is the mission of Healing Ground Counseling. I hope that you will feel comfortable and the desire to start your healing journey. And as you do so, I am here and I am ready to go on this journey with you! You’re just one step away from starting the journey of a lifetime.
