How to Use Your

Out-of-Network Benefits

Benefits of Self-Pay

  • Greater Privacy & Control

When you pay out of pocket, your therapy remains completely confidential between you and your therapist. You have full control over what information is shared, when, and with whom.

    - No diagnosis is required unless you choose to submit a superbill.

    - Your records, treatment notes, and progress are not shared with an insurance company.

    - This means your mental health information won’t become part of your permanent medical record, which could impact things like future life insurance or employment background checks for careers that are more strict in their mental-fitness requirements such as pilots, first responders, military, and medical professionals.

  • Freedom in Treatment Choices

Insurance companies often limit session length, frequency, or number of covered sessions per year—and may deny coverage if they don’t consider your concern “medically necessary.” Your care is customized to your unique needs and goals, not dictated by insurance rules.

    - Self-pay allows you and your therapist to decide what’s best for your healing, not an insurance adjuster.

    - You can continue therapy for as long as it’s helpful, even after symptoms improve.

    - We can use approaches best suited to your goals (even those insurance doesn’t reimburse well, like couples therapy, play therapy, or trauma work).

  • More Personalized & Effective Work

Without the need to meet insurance requirements, therapy can focus on growth, insight, and long-term change, not just “symptom reduction.” You get deeper, more meaningful results that go beyond what insurance-driven therapy typically allows.

    - We can address the root causes of challenges instead of just managing surface-level symptoms.

    - No pressure to fit into a narrow diagnosis for coverage.

    - Sessions can focus on what matters most to you—whether that’s self-esteem, relationships, parenting, or personal growth.

How Reimbursement Works

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt that Healing Ground Counseling provides, which includes all the necessary information your insurance company needs to process a claim.

This includes diagnosis codes, session dates, CPT codes, and provider information.

Disclaimer for using Superbills:

When submitting a superbill to your insurance, a diagnosis code is included—this is a requirement for most insurance companies to determine reimbursement eligibility. However, because Healing Ground Counseling doesn’t bill your insurance directly, your therapy records and diagnosis are not automatically shared with or stored by your insurer on your personal health record. This allows for greater privacy, autonomy, and confidentiality in your care.

Tips for an Easier Reimbursement Process

  • Some apps and services (like Thrizer, Reimbursify, or Mentaya) can help with the verification and submission process. These services may charge a small fee of about 2-5% per claim, but they fully handle the process.

  • Keep copies of all submissions and communications with your insurance.

  • If reimbursement is denied, ask your insurer for a written explanation and consider filing an appeal if applicable.
